John....There are as many "brilliant" ideas (My Own Special Technique) as there are people to provide them! Some are pretty smart, but most are not. It all comes down to this. Them connectors are a big chunk of metal...so you gotta use a bunch of heat. The problem with that is the dialectric around the inner conductor doesn't like that much heat. Those two ideas are hard to manage!
So...you gotta use a bunch of heat....fast, then cool it down.
File the area you are going to solder with one of those mini files, Then either use a BIG weller gun, or some have success with an iron with a big tip (won't get the heat sucked out of it as fast) I use a 260 watt Weller gun. Make sure the tip is tight and tinned, and after the job...dunk it in a cup of cold water to cool off...then compressed air to dry it out. NO pencils, circuit board irons, anything from Radio Shack, butane gadgets, battery operated gadgets....they just don't have the 'umph' to get the job done. I've found that straying from the "lot of heat, fast" idea results in a failed job every time.

....Dave
