The reason that the amp had no T/R relay is, there were no transceivers back
then.
We had separate receivers and transceivers.
Antenna switching was always done external to the transmitter.
Transmitters had no T/R relay.
The transmitter was simply connected to the input of the amp.
Many people used an external T/R relay to switch the antenna between the
transmitter and the receiver.
If you used an amp, you just used the same switching circuit but connected
it to the amp's RF out.
Even cooler was the "Johnson Viking TR Switch."
This was an external device with two vacuum tubes that automatically
switched the antenna between the RX or TX (instantly) whenever it was
activated.
I guess we can say the Ameritron QSK-5 is the descendant of the old Johnson
Viking TR Switch.
