Regarding beeswax and Prelube; I doubt many are using Prelube 6 as a tower leg
lubricant. It's too light IMHO. It's the best available for protecting cables
and keeping them clean from sticking dust, etc.
OTOH, Beeswax can be brushed on and the coating drys, remains very clean
compared to grease, etc.
To get beeswax to a spreadable consistency you'll need to first melt it. I do
this by just covering the beeswax with boiled linseed oil in a clear jar. The
jar is then placed in hot water bath (double boiler style).
You'll need a heat source that is safe for the purpose and one that you don't
mind if you splash a bit over. That pretty much eliminates any kind of open gas
flame. I used a stand-alone induction, glass topped burner that I could move
outdoors on the porch. A small sauce pan for the water and the glass jar
sitting in the water full of beeswax just covered with boiled linseed oil.
Once the beeswax is melted and stirred you should add enough mineral spirits to
make it thin enough to spread when cooled.
If you warm it for spreading (or thin it enough with mineral oil) you can use a
brush.
I prefer not to thin it too much because it will be messier to use and run down
the tower legs more than you want. Just keep it warm enough to spread on with a
putty knife or spatula.
With some experience you'll be able to customize your mix for the preferred
method.
Lasts a lot longer Prelube 6, years in the right conditions.
