Also of interest to folks interested in soft start for heat pumps (or other equipment) are load shed modules that (in my case) allow a third heat pump to start up if the load on the generator is low enough to not overload by starting the heat pump.  If I have the generator loaded too near capacity the load shed module prevents power being sent to that heat pump.  The load shed module also checks for proper voltage and frequency before it will send power to its load (a heat pump in my case.) Of course load shed modules can be used for other purposes, not just for my purpose.

I installed them myself -- it's straightforward. The instructions say that it takes
several start cycles for the unit to optimize the start load, so it seems there are some
adaptable characteristics ("smarts") that are part and parcel of them. These
ran roughly $250 each and, as a bonus, I get zero RFI out of them.

I don't have any financial interest in the company or any of their
distributors; I think I got mine from Johnstone Supply, but I'm not certain of
it. Simply know what these units do and how well these particular units work,
so I can't vouch for any of the others.

Just learned of something new to me - soft start for air conditioners. As I will be replacing both air handlers and compressors this year and I have a whole house backup NG generator, you have tweaked my interest. Where do I find more info on them?
On a side note I heard mention that variable speed air handler blowers can
cause hash compared to quiet fixed speed blowers. Any truth to that.
Tnx for any feedback

Hi Tim,

I’m a bit surprised they aren’t offered as a standard add-on. I was pretty
skeptical until I installed them and when I saw the difference they made. I was pretty much
blown away!

I’d never considered the issue for cell sites but now that you mention it, of
course!

Hello Kim:

Excellent post about soft start on your air conditioners. That is
important on generators and also for the AC mains as well. All six
(we use two 3 ton units for shack cooling) air conditioner units here
at K3LR have soft starts and there is no drag on the AC power when they come on
line.

I learned about soft start air conditioners early on when constructing
cellular networks. Without soft start the generator voltage drop would
cause significant issue for the sensitive network equipment.

FWIW, we have a small General 14 kW NG air-cooled generator with a
manual transfer switch. It's RF quiet at any frequency I can hear,
from the BC band through 450 MHz.

As an aside, we had trouble starting our air conditioner units with it
(4 ton and a 2 1/2 ton units). The start current requirements were
well beyond what it could reliably handle. But, last summer I
installed some true soft-start modules (made in Australia). The
difference was staggering: I can now start both units simultaneously
without problem on generator power and lights no longer dim when the units
start on commercial power.

Hello Dana

I installed a 48RCL with transfer switch 3 years ago. It is totally
RFI quiet. That was one of the qualifiers.

It has been an awesome machine. 48 KW load tested.
