Being in an ocean environment with marine installations we normally solder
the center pin, just because. With the crimped center pin I have seen
failures over the years.
Even with the crimp there is a small hole for soldering which I do. Some of
the off shore LMR400/600 connectors are beyond atrocious, with crimp
sleeves that don't conform to spec, center pins that fracture etc.
We have done away with clamp connectors for obvious reasons.
Salt air has an inherent ability to corrode everything, even in a wheel
house an IC-736 which should not have been in there that was pretty much
done.
With the exception of our mountain installations, at times we don't solder
the center pins.
