Ah, but you must remember that when the ARRL DX contest started, the ARRL was 
both the US & Canada.  And at the time, both Alaska & Hawaii were still 
territories & separated DXCC entities.


Although the ARRL Canadian Division eventually became the CRRL, now part of 
RAC, the ARRL DX contest is still "The US & Canada vs Everyone Else".  And 
"everyone else" still includes AK & HI since they remain separate DXCC 
entities, even though they are now states.


So it's really not that interesting at all, just historical legacy that is 
still respected.


John, you are of course free to petition the ARRL Contest Branch folks to have 
this all changed.  Good luck with that.

It is interesting that in the ARRL DX contest, US stations cannot work
Canada which is a separate country from the US, but we can work Alaska and
Hawaii, which are both part of the US.  Not exactly a "DX Contest" is it?
