see if it has a battery backup in it and replace that. try turning it on with the cpu reset buttons pressed. or just wait a while after powering up, i have some ft-1000mp's that seem to take a minute

In my setup I route the computer audio to both the mic jack and the packet jack. For doing rtty i use pkt-lsb which gets the audio from the rear packet jack and also allows use of the narrow cw filte

As I pointed out, this tap location is not the same as the rx out to rx in loop you describe in that it doesn't need an external switch and it takes advantage of the mp's pre 1st stage rf amp bandpas

Was the fan coming on? That could have failed causing runaway overheating of the power supply which would cause it to shutoff, I think there is a thermal switch in there somewhere. could also be bias
