Everything I send via USPS I include a delivery confirmation as a protection to 
the buyer and myself. At least this way he and they have proof the item has 
been sent.  If it was not delivered, the confirmation (or lack of it) speaks 
for itself.
The cost? A measly .45 cents additional.
Cheap peace of mind, I'd say.

  My experience is only with domestic and not global
  If you purchase insurance they will give you a tracking number, although I 
  never could track a package with it.
  I talked to someone at USPS and was told you can only do on-line tracking if 
  the package is sent with signature verification.
