| Amen to this, though I've never felt the need to use split bolts.  
However, I used one in one side of my Carolina Windom, which is under 
quite a lot of tension due to the weight of the balun and unun in the 
center, and it has held up since the wire broke 4+ years ago. Frankly 
didn't expect it to.
