I've always been told (and I believe it) that a stage drawing grid current
with no drive is either a stage that is oscillating or has a very gassy
tube. I have seen a 4-250A drawing 50mA of grid current with no drive and
not oscillating: but there was a hell of a blueish - purple glow inside.

I figure the seals were leaking like one of Carl's British motorcycles!
