Actually, 5 kHz of audio equates to an AM bandwith of 10 kHz.  Each AM
sideband contains the same 5 kHz of information.

If the only objective is to communicate using the least amount of necessary
bandwidth, then we should limit ourselves to only CW, PSK31, and other very
narrow bandwidth modes.  Why waste more bandwidth using SSB than can be
transmitted in CW or PSK31?  Clearly, there's more to operating than
minimizing bandwidth and power.
