Tuning for max smoke with the Tune & Load controls while watching the grid 
current always works for me, at least for triodes.  A Pecker also works in 
lieu of plain old key down saves the final and the exciter.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but have you read the manual?  There 
is an extensive write up on tune up procedures.
