[CQ-Contest] computers ruined contesting

Subject: [CQ-Contest] computers ruined contesting

I noticed during WPX CW that N1MM Logger sent spots for stations like
RO4M/6 as "RO6/RO4M", the so-called "normalized" callsign. I logged him
each Q as he sent it, assuming log checks would bounce the normalized
version. I see Tom has now updated the s/w to spot calls as logged.

I'm tempted, but will continue to refrain from entering the perpetual
packet thread of Good vs. Evil. However, IMHO computers have no more
"ruined" contesting than they have "ruined" bookkeeping. Anybody doing
paper logs with quill pens?

The DX station is unlikely to change his call during the contest.
What's
more likely is that someone using primitive a logging program MUST log
the
portable prefix one way or the other (maybe different from what the DX
is
sending) to make it work. Then they spot the callsign that their logging

program likes, rather than the one the DX station is sending, someone
else
picks it up off packet, and the problem spreads.

Funny how packet keeps entering into these discussions!
