I see that as a major distraction rather than assistance. It would be
easier to tune around looking for mults.

Which is why it is best left in the assisted category.

Honestly, even the Mult totals, if you watch close, which you have to assume
you are when you are unassisted since that channel of info is not being
pushed in that mode, would tell you a new band just opened up for the person
you are chasing.

I would agree with that.

I have my contest logger set up not to post the breakdowns - only the
QSO/Mult totals and score.  That way no one can be tempted.  :)

Contesting at the highest levels is a game of information management.  Thus
the temptation to use every resource available. It is difficult to write a
rule that says follow the spirit of the rule no matter what you may read.
