I have to agree with K1TN. I have often been frustrated on 160 by S9+
stations ignoring me, while the guy I can barely copy comes right back. I
don't think the big stations are intentionally ignoring me. They might be
using a RX antenna pointed away from me while TXing with an omnidirectional
antenna. That is quite possible with me being in Florida and the rest of
the country listening for EU or AS. I also think the propagation
characteristics of 160 meters can just sometimes be weird.

As for the panhandling example, I've never tried so I have no comment.
Although it seems like it might be a good way to save up for a new Icom
7851...
