You're mistaking speed for efficiency.  75-baud would be way faster,
but if everyone else is set to 45.45-baud, it's not very efficient.

Sure, you can skip the various spaces or CRs in the various places,
but then many stations won't be able to properly discern your call
sign or the exchange and will have to either take a few seconds to
stare at the screen or ask for a repeat.  You were fast, but you
weren't efficient.

Same applies to sending your exchange only once.  Yes, it's faster,
but sending it twice gives the other guy error detection.  Sending it
three times gives error correction as well but isn't needed in most
instances.
