So that's it! I worked several stations in the WPX RTTY that had a weird
pace to the diddles being sent . It was sort of like a surge that would
turn on and then suddenly turn off again. Several characters, pause, some
more characters, pause then a few more, pause. What a PITA to listen to!
Why would anyone in their right mind want to consider using paddles to
send diddles instead of a keyboard? It may serve a purpose in an
emergency situation where no keyboard is available, but in a contest it is
less than useless. Just because the radio has some ridiculous
functionality put into the rig by the marketing department doesn't mean
the owner has to use it!

He is probably using a K3, Bill.
In fact, if you think back, was the "9" of your call sign slightly
delayed?
The K3 has this abortion (there is no other way to describe it) where you
place the rig into FSK mode and use a paddle to send RTTY.
(It won't work with a straight key, since the firmware is looking for the
left and right paddle to recognize a character. Won't work in AFSK
either.)
So, a "9" will take longer time to arrive unless the guy is doing 100 WPM
on his paddle. And if you listen carefully, what you will hear is
"W<beeep>9OL" because the K3 is stupid enough to wait for the 9 to finish
and does not put out a diddle in the meantime.
If you remember, Phil GU0SUP mentioned some years ago hearing what sound
like slow, stuttery RTTY, but copies at 45.45 baud. That was a K3.
If I were you, I would have sent "SRI, YOU HAVE BROKEN RIG. QRZ W9OL"
