I have to wonder about the wisdom of on the air bulletin and code
practice in this day and age. W1AW probably has $100,000 or more
tied up in capital equipment (transceivers, computers, amplifiers,
antennas, etc.) plus maintenance costs, the cost of professional
operator(s), operating costs, etc. that probably run that much or
more on an annual basis.
All the on the air bulletins and code practice could be replaced by
a few lines of code in some smartphone/tablet apps ... one to get
bulletins and another one for streaming code practice on demand. It
seems the financial and personnel resources could be much better
allocated to other priorities - like protecting traditional narrow
band amateur modes and supporting HF activities DX/contesting/the
traditional awards programs. And at the same time, the information,
education and outreach mandates of the League would be in areas where
younger, tech savvy people just might stumble on it!

for years on 14275. Just be ready to be at your station 24/7.
So when W1AW comes on, either QSY or just copy it.

Published months in advance do not allow one to break the rules. So if I

It would be interesting to see a poll taken of the amateur community on
the need for ARRL W1AW broadcast station. Broadcasting was good when it was
created but may no longer be useful or used. Maintaining a club station
for member use has value; however, I would rather see the operational cost
of broadcasting channeled into more useful projects, like LoTW.

Dick, I think you should send a copy of your email to ARRL and ask why
they interfered with one of their own W1AW portable stations? Also ask
what are they going to do to insure this doesn't happen again to any
unfortunate soul who happens to be operating on "their" frequency when its
time to transmit a ARRL bulletin?

This is amusing. The ARRL is touting RM 11708 as being helpful, while
at the same time QRMing an on-going operation on a frequency without
checking to see if it is busy! The ARRL does not have a right to a
frequency if it is occupied already. They are supposed to move to prevent
QRM, correct?
