A real example of 'changing as needed' happened this weekend.
The big European antenna developed a high SWR, so we had to use a less
than optimum antenna. (We destroyed a lightning arrestor with the high
duty cycle.) The replacement antenna was a low inverted Vee intended
for domestic use, with a higher take off angle and less gain to EU.
Because of this, we had to modify our exchange because we just were no
longer loud into Europe.
But, we were loud 'somewhere'. A station from PA followed up his QSO
with 'May I ask you a question?', the 80 meter op typed 'sure'.
Question was 'How much pwr and ant?' Told him '1400 watts and inverted
vee at 72 feet'. He said we were 60db over S-9. So, I guess we were
loud somewhere, just not where we needed it. He did NOT ask for a repeat...

If condx are good, and you have a good path to where your target DX
is, then maybe just 'his call', 'state' and 'zone', without your call
would be enough in the exchange. If condx get noisy, QRM or QRN, then
you may need his call and your call with a couple of 'state' and
'zone' exchanges.
You need to do as much as you need to, but only that much, in order to
cleanly make the QSO, with few repeats.
100 watts and a dipole will most likely require a diffAerent exchange
than 1500 watts and stacked yagis.

N1MM default has "his call, sec, state, sec, state, mycall"
At times with a strong station I would hit escape before "my call"
was sent. I had no problem with that.
Cutting to "sec state sec state" scares me that the other station
might not have my call or I might have busted his?

Keeping it simple, on the next contest drop your exchange by one of
each element and see how it goes. In any event, do drop the "UR"
out of it in all cases.

My thought was to send my state and zone 3 times, hopefully not
needing a
repeat. That seemed to work I only had 1 station ask me for a
repeat of my
State. My thinking was not having a lot of repeats, I could make more
contacts and move along quicker.
Please tell me if my thinking is wrong. I'm not in the big league
either,
just trying to have some fun.

slow down an exchange. Those a nothing compared to the many ops that I
worked in the CQ WW DX RTTY Contest last weekend that took 15-20
seconds or
longer to reply. I'm not in the big leagues and worry about
milliseconds,
but when it takes almost a minute to complete a contact, that gets
to me.
