I find the Jupiter to be a wonderful starter radio.
Once you've mastered the bare radio, you can add N4PY software and learn
that end of the hobby.
When you're comfortable with all of that, then you can move up a notch or
two.

Indy drivers don't just jump in an Indy car for their first race, they work
up to it.
Somebody gave that poor chap some expensive and bad advice.

My own thoughts are that it is a VERY bad decision for a new ham to start
with a 200 watt mega-rig from the get-go....Ten Tec OR ricebox!
