You have a good point, Phil. Some DX guys send 30 to 40 WPM, but shoot I can't even type that fast on a keyboard. Regarding CW, I make a lot more contacts on 40 meters using CW than SSB with my Yaesu FT-817ns. However on normal power (100 Watts or +) it is often easier to find a SSB contact on 40 meters than to find anyone working CW during the daytime. If the S/N ratio is high enough and the frequency clear, a good CW program copies morse code at high speeds better than I can and it writes it down.

I think the advent of the sound-card interface is probably responsible for
much of the perceived increase in CW participation, but it does raise- at
least in my mind- a question of legitimacy in contests.

It's a little bothersome to me to hear some self-proclaimed big Dxers talk
about all the stations they work on CW, when I know some can't copy enough
to pass the old Novice test.

It seems to me the op who copies for real should have a point advantage vs. the op who is using "artificial cw". I don't work contests, only picking up
the occasional contact of particular DX interest, but I wonder if anyone
else shares this point of view.
