I don't remember the depth and can't put my hands on the drawings for my 
HDX-555 tower, but the contractor used a large augur then squared the 
hole (sort of) by hand. He ended up using 9 yards of concrete instead of 
6 1/2, but I still paid the price he quoted originally.

It didn't register at the time, but he did climb right down into the 
hole, which was probably not OK, but I assumed that he knew what he was 
doing, since he works with concrete all day.
