 What I did here was to use the steel cable but I pulled it on out into the
clear past any tree limbs that would damage the rope then attached a high
quality marine pully to the steel cable. Pulled my rope through the pully
and put a couple of window  sash weights on the end of the rope. Now the
rope can move freely without rubbing against the tree.
