The spark plug arrester has the disadvantage of rather blunt points. Much
better, as someone mentioned, is a pair of copper (prefereably) or brass
plates with facing sharp points, gapped about l/32" (a little less than l
mm.) The suggested 90 degree angle is fine. This will drain a static
charge and carry quite a bit of current; a resistor across the line will
drain the static, but if there's enough charge to pruduce appreciable
current the resistor won't last long. - - The heavy knife switch to
ground along with actual disconnecting the lead-in's from the equipment is
obviously the best protection. K3TX

Yes, but with a knife switch one can't operate and be protected at the sametime. With the spark plug arrestor operation continues with protection. The knife switch is best when one is away from the station. That presumesone does not forget to close it when securing the station. Also, the knifeswitch should be located outside of the structure for added safety. 73 Bob, K4TAX----- Original Message ----- From: "Lyle Dunlap" <qskqrq@grics.net>To: "Discussion of Ten-Tec Equipment" <tentec@contesting.com> Sent: Monday, April 14, 2008 7:15 AM Subject: Re: [TenTec] Ten Tec 238A settings? One can use all sorts of spark plugs & things to drain off those little sparkies mother nature puts out, however its hard to beat a DPDT heavy knife switch. For over 25 years I had a 3 wire Rhombic up 375 ft on a leg and with 4500 feet of wire basically in the form of a capacitor you can have your own fireworks display. Go with a knife switch.
