The advantage to the spark plug arrestor over the high value resistor is that the spark plug offers very high resistance until the arc is ignited then the effective value of R goes very low. Almost like putting a dead short on the line. Only for an instant or until the arc is extinguished. The gap method offers much better protection. High R values resistors stay the same value until they explode then they go higher.

Remember those little ceramic blocks that were used for tv twin lead for
lightning protection? I took one apart...two high value resistors inside.

Didn't have an arrestor on the outside, eh. Folks that put up antennas
need
to understand the need for lightning protection systems. I've found that
most don't........understand. Many take shortcuts and omit critical
components and configurations. Lightning can be extremely nasty but it
doesn't have to be such.

Ahhhhhhh...success! Ran 600ohm feeders all the way to the tuner in the
shack! Since there is no wiring in that part of the ceiling, I just
screwed
some cuphooks on the ceiling and suspended the feeders in them.
Preliminary
tuning is nice and smooth.

I did that once.....after $23,000 worth of fire damage from a direct
lightning strike that followed the open wire feeder into the house.

Be careful and take precautions. 73
