I suppose they DID check the top logs, which must have still been a huge
job. Alas, I doubt any of the multi-multi efforts I did from W9YT way
back then attracted any interest.
In any case, you have confirmed that, at least into the early 80's, real
RST's were sent and copied.

DID send real signal reports in DX contests. I remember two operators
puzzling over whether a UA9 sent 559 or 569 on 80 meters, not that there
